THE SMOKING RETURNS: WHAT DEFINES IT NOW?
The smoking, also known as the tuxedo or dinner jacket, is the timeless symbol of black tie style. More than just a suit, a smoking is a tailored evening outfit created for life’s most formal occasions. Its signature lies in the satin or grosgrain details on the lapels, the trousers and often the buttons, giving the smoking its unmistakable elegance.
Traditionally crafted in black or midnight blue, the smoking is worn with a crisp white shirt, a black bow tie and polished shoes. Its story began in late nineteenth century England with the smoking jacket and later crossed the Atlantic, where it became known as the tuxedo, named after New York’s Tuxedo Park.
Today, the smoking remains the dress code of choice for weddings, galas and every event where refinement and sophistication are essential.
At Atelier ACÀN we create smokings and tuxedos made to measure, blending the timeless rules of black tie with modern tailoring. Whether you call it smoking, tuxedo or dinner jacket, one thing never changes: an evening look that is sharp, confident and unforgettable.

THE RULES OF THE SMOKING
A smoking is not just a suit, it follows a set of unwritten rules, known as the black tie dress code. Here’s what defines the look:
01. The Jacket
A single-breasted black or midnight blue jacket with satin or grosgrain lapels. Shawl collar or peak lapel, never notch. It’s sleek, sharp, and instantly formal.
02. The Trousers
Matching trousers with a satin side stripe. No belt loops, instead, tailored to perfection and worn with braces if needed.
03. The Shirt
A crisp white evening shirt, often with a pleated or piqué front. Cufflinks over buttons. Think understated, not flashy.
04. The Bow Tie
Always a bow tie, traditionally in black silk. A tie is never black tie. Bonus points if you tie it yourself.
05. The Shoes
Polished patent leather shoes or well-shined oxfords. Black only.
06. The Extras
Optional details: a silk pocket square, elegant cufflinks, or velvet slippers for personality.
At weddings, galas, or formal dinners, following these rules ensures your smoking looks effortless, refined but never overdressed.
